1  Software / Other Software / Chinese propaganda on: September 02, 2011, 01:19:08 pm
Was asked to eyeball a Chinese video clip recently.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_Wu1HlZbBk&feature=youtu.be&t=36s

I think it was designed for in-house propaganda but I noted a fun oddity.  At 1:24, 2:03, 2:22, and 9:31 minutes:seconds into the clip there are brief glimpses of the GLMatrix screensaver which is part of some Linux distributions, notably Ubuntu derivatives.

Not sure if the Chinese are big Linux users or if they just think the screensaver is cool.

Picked this up at the BBC site.  Comedian Nick Helm won a British award fro best joke of the year:

"I needed a password eight characters long so I picked Snow White and the Seven Dwarves."

Stumbled across this Linux t-shirt browsing.  Don't think I am brave enough to wear this t-shirt anywhere...

4  Distributions / Debian Based Distrtibutions / Gnome 3 on: May 04, 2011, 12:41:23 pm
Expecting to see the Gnome 3 desktop when Fedora 15 is released at the end of this month.  Will give it a try then.

I've downloaded Ubuntu 11.04 twice but each time the CHECKSUM failed.  Screenshots look pretty cool.

In the near future Ubuntu free disks will not  be available:

Interesting story about Penguin Computing selling very high-speed servers running Linux to high-speed stock traders.  As the article notes small increments of time can make the difference between profits and losing one's ass.

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/04/04/penguin_computing_altus_1750_server/

They certify the servers with Redhat, Centos, or SuSe Enterprise flavors of Linux.

Iran has announced the creation of its own cyber warfare capability:

Guess the suxtnet worm got their attention.

Bring 'em on.

I watched all three shows too and do not remember any reference to Linux or SuSE.

9  Distributions / RPM Based Distributions / PBS documentary IBM Watson on: February 09, 2011, 06:50:13 am
Tonight on PBS is a Nova documentary about IBM's Watson Linux cluster running SuSE Linux on Jeopardy.

IBM has invested heavily in the project and I think there may be far-reaching payoffs for the effort.

9:00 PM Central.  In the Pensacola area this translates to WSRE Channel 23, I think.  I'll be in the vicinity of Tyndall AFB and I think it will be on WFSU Channel 11.

10  Distributions / RPM Based Distributions / IBM Watson runs SuSE on: February 04, 2011, 09:40:04 pm
This relates to the upcoming AI showdown between Jeopardy top performers versus an IBM system named Watson.

Turns out the cluster is running SuSE Enterprise Server.  Nice advertising for SuSE!

Alex Trebek, "And now we'll take a commercial break."

Watson, "I'm sorry Alex.  I'm afraid I can't do that."

13  Distributions / Security / PGP with Ubuntu on: December 20, 2010, 09:02:10 am
Got PGP 6.5.8 for Linux working with Ubuntu 10.10.  Found nothing about doing it on the Internet.

It involved converting two .rpm files to .deb with the alien utility in Ubuntu and then installing by simply double clicking on the .deb files in the file manager and thus using the Ubuntu Software Manager.

Works like a champ.

Put the two .deb files in a tarball.

I can send it to LUG members as a e-mail attachment (3875 KB) to see if the tarball works.

Would like suggestions about how to upload the file and make it available for download by the public for free. Some file sharing service?  At a member's web site?  Somewhere at the LUG site?  Might generate some hits.

Thanks.

This should be fun.  IBM artificial intelligence software butting heads with a couple of human wizards---

Should have some interesting side bets.

15  Software / Other Software / Take the fork on: December 02, 2010, 05:42:36 am
"When you come to a fork in the road...take it," Yogi Berra.

Seems as if OpenOffice is toast.  LibreOffice is its open source successor.  Both Ubuntu and Fedora plan to have it in their next releases.
